What Happened To Our Democracy?

After the devastation of World War II the world came to realize future wars using nuclear weapons could destroy this world and a new system for providing a more peaceful and civilized existence in this world was needed, thus the United Nations was formed.

The other direction governments could take was to pursue military expansionism with nuclear weapons to ensure their defense.

Once one single country pursued this path others were forced to follow and the overall purpose of the United Nations was nullified.

Today the American people have become oppressed slaves to their military power and have been forced to give up their democratic rights and freedoms for their security.

Ben Franklin stated, once you give up your liberty and democratic rights for your security, you deserve neither. The cost the American people have had to pay for their military power is being a constant target always having to defend itself from those who wish not to be militarily dominated by the U.S. government.

The American people and their democracy has been oppressed and dominated by fear as a result of their military power and expansionism.

The United States government is now the most barbaric, brutal, and uncivilized country in the world and has been responsible for more deaths (approximately seven million people killed) then any other country since the mid 1950's.

The strange thing is the American people act shocked when someone attacks their country (911, the USS Cole, etc) and can't understand why.

We have been conditioned to believe a strong military is the best way to defend our country, but when that military power jeopardizes our security and safety because our leaders are abusing it for purposes other then to defend our country, we should not be surprised.

Being civilized and living in Peace is the sacrifice we have made for military power.

They say when you live by the sword you die by the sword and we now live totally by the sword.

There was a time when it was patriotic to defend our country and democratic way of life, which was back when our democracy was one that was by the people, for the people, and of the people.

Today, our government is corporate controlled, which means we have sacrificed our democratic rights, freedoms, security, and safety to defend a government, which is by the corporations, for the corporations, and of the corporations.

This was not part of the original deal when our democracy was formed. Nowhere in our Constitution, Declaration of Independence, or Bill of Rights does it mention the American people must yield their democracy to the corporate powers.

The reason our democracy was formed was to be self- governing and get away from totalitarian rule. The first paragraph of the Declaration of Independence states clearly the obligation to preserve our democracy rest squarely with the American people, yet the American people are so oblivious to their democratic responsibilities they have allowed their democracy to fail. A democracy is only as strong as the people who participate in it.

The Military Hazards of Arrogance

Military people are frequently accused of being arrogant. The extremely confident air of some people gets them an accusation like this, but very often, the accusation is accurate. The profession of 'diplomacy through other means' breeds arrogance to some extent, simply because successfully using force against someone else is not a profession for milquetoasts. Some people are just plain arrogant, and others grow into it over the years. Nearly everyone has experienced the dubious pleasure of working with, or for, one of these people.

In the military, arrogance can have far reaching effects. Since commanders are the ones usually written about in the history books, they are the ones usually seen to be arrogant, and with good cause. Napoleon didn't start out arrogant, but he rapidly became an expert in it. Highly competent, a visionary, and, literally, an empire builder; he fell prey to the idea that he could do no wrong. Moscow and Waterloo proved him wrong, but he never accepted that the failure was his. He was simply too arrogant to recognize his own shortcomings. The only general I know of that has a mental disease named after him. George Custer didn't make an out-of-character mistake at the Little Big Horn; he simply continued his normal pattern of arrogant behavior. His first 'Little Big Horn' occurred during the Civil War, when he led his Division in a rash attack against the superior enemy force during the Valley Campaign.

Plans to Increase Army's Strength

What we know, for fact, is the soldiers that are being sent to Afghanistan and Iraq are being sent on multiple tours; therefore it would seem reasonable to add additional combat troops to increase the end-strength of our Army.

The problem with adding troops is the fact they are either being blown to bits, and/or they are coming home with a host of medical and/or psychological needs that may eventually require treatment at a VA facility. As of 10:00 am EST on January 7, 2008, the Department of Defense is indicating 35,048 casualties for Iraq and Afghanistan. 4,378 dead and 30,670 wounded. The Afghanistan figures are only through December 29, 2007 so the actual toll will be higher.

My opposition to adding more troops is twofold; first I believe in negotiation, not war. Second, my husband is a former combat veteran and receives treatment at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center. If they are not already receiving VA care, sooner or later many of the 35,048 casualties, and additional troops that are service connected for medical and/or psychological problems, are going to require care at a VA facility and here is an example of what they might run into...

My husband received a letter from the VA asking him to call to schedule an appointment in the Endocrine clinic, my husband is service connected for Diabetes Mellitus caused by exposure to the herbicide Agent Orange and is seen on a fairly regular basis due to the numerous medical problems caused by Diabetes.

I called the number listed on the letter and after being put on hold for 9 minutes, I hung up and called the main number and was transferred to the clinic extension where I waited on hold for an additional 11 minutes. After a period of twenty minutes I was finally able to schedule an appointment, for next month. Remember, I was calling because the VA sent a letter requesting a call.

What is going to happen to the troops that don't get a letter requesting them to call? How long will they be put on hold? The majority of the brave men and women whose lives have been put in jeopardy over and over again, by this administration, are suffering from various stages of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder due to multiple combat tours.

Should they, along with the other approximate five million veterans the VA treats, have to wait 20 minutes just to schedule an appointment?

Indian Navy

The Indian Air Force has given the go ahead for induction of the indigenous surface-to-air Akash missile.
To start with, a squadron of these missiles, comprising 16 launchers would be inducted into the force, in what could be a happy new year tidings for the missile scientists, after repeated rejections by IAF experts earlier, according to Air Chief Fali Homi Major.
The IAF decision comes after a recent string of successful trials of the missile undertaken at the country's interim test range at Balasore in Orissa.
The missile has already suffered a massive slippage as it was earlier scheduled to be ready for induction in 2003.
"The trials of the Akash missile have gone pretty well. We will get a squadron of these missiles once the trials are over," Major told newsperson on the sidelines of a function in Delhi, where he also outlined that IAF was acquiring more advanced radars for a "gap free" coverage of the country's vulnerable areas like the southern peninsula.He also said that the IAF had undertaken joint exercises in the region to test reaction to threats from the sea as well as to finetune synergy for increasing civil air traffic in the region.
"We just carried out an exercises in the southern peninsula to activate forces in the area and ensure integration of all air defence assets in the area," he said.

The Early Roman Army Battle Tactics

Another part of the army's tactics was to build a camp at the end of every day's march. The afternoon saw the rapid construction of an army camp, and the night was reserved for rest from the day's march and labor. The camp served multiple purposes. First and foremost it served as a nightly defense against surprise attacks and as a base to retreat to just in case a defeat should ever happy. The construction of camps also gave the soldiers and officers a place to rest peacefully. Much of the Roman army's success depended on coolness of temper.
A Roman soldier was kept from nervous strain as long as possible, so as to perform well under the intense stress of battle. The existence of a camp contributed greatly to this. It also exemplified the tenacity of the Romans. If defeated in battle, they would not have to retreat far, and they would fight again the next day, if not the same day. Also, instead of being pushed back far back into their own lands, the camp served as a fortified stronghold, which could be used to fend off the left over attackers from the previous battle until reinforcements could arrive.

The way the battles were fought showed why the army became so powerful. The main force advanced in three lines, consisting of the Hastati, Principes, and Triarii, in that order. The Velites formed a light screen in front. Though it is unclear the exact formation the army took, it is generally agreed that the maniples (units of 120 men) were arranged in a checkerboard formation, so the first line could fall back if need through the lines of the second without breaking up formation. As the enemy approached, the Velites would pepper the enemy with javelin fire until the depleted their ammunition or else the charging enemy got too close, and then they would retreat through the lines of the Hastati and on to the back of the army. When the enemy came within thirty or so yards, the Hastati would release a volley of their pila, to further weaken the lines and the morale of the enemy. When the fighting became hot, and the first line Hastati become tired or incur too many losses, they would fall back through the Principes, in which case they would pick up the fight with renewed strength. If they continued to fight and lose ground, then the Principes would fall back through the line of Triarii, which were the last line of defense. They then would present the enemy with a line of heavy spears and fresh strength, which would hopefully be enough to win the battle. As the Roman saying went, "It has come to the Triarii", meant that the battle had progressed to the bitter end, and was possible the turning point.
